Did you ever heard about the "Dark Was the Night" compilation, released in 2009, the sales of this LP aims to benefit to the Red Hot Organization specialized on AIDS and HIV.

This masterpiece produced by Aaron and Bryce Dressner from the National is definiltely a must have for all the indie folk-rock fans. It features the National, Feist, My Brightest Diamond, Antony and the Johnsons, and many more.

My favorite track of the compilation is performed by Sufjan Stevens, a genious singer, songwriter and musician from Detroit. I also give you the remix from the canadian emcee/producer Buck 65. You all probably already know the design studio/company BLK/MKT because of the huge success of Shepard Fairley-Obey during Obama's presidential campaign.

Dave Kinsey is the other founding member of BLK/MKT. He started his work in the street drawing, painting, sticking some portrayals of urban characters.

You'll see below what he used to do years ago, great transcription of the urban contemporary life... Check out what he's doing now on his website, a little bit different...

Dave Kinsey also worked on designing a mini-serie of 4 twelve inches released on Om record, label founded by the rap band People Under The Stairs.

I would say that they're worth to buy for the covers, my favorite track is an instrumental one by Mission and Michael Morgan.

It's pretty hard to find vynils from 70-80's in Istanbul because of the hype behind this.

I found few ones I wanted to share with you guys. Here's a piece of my digging time in Istanbul, the famous rock singer Baris Manco with his LP 2023 released in 1975.

This is the combo between anatolian psyche-rock, funky breaks and turkish pop. This opus stands as a concept-album that includes many instrumental songs.

Son of a jazz legend - the hard bop organist Big John Patton- Superstar Quamallah released an ep on ABB records in 99'. Then nothing happened for almost 10 years...

In 2009 Superstar Quamallah came out with the LP Invisible man on Brick records. He also release a 7' produced by Izznyce California Dreamin' that doesn't appear on the full lengh. A very cool boom bap track with a soul and jazzfull atmosphere. Check it out this is exclusive:

Night of the living dead -1968-

George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, one of the most influential of the low-budget horror films to proliferate in the 70's, has a black actor... Duane Jones as its protagonist.
In the movie, Jones projects an urbane, upwardly mobile attitude in his idealized role as the resourceful black survivor. In eveyone of the Living Dead sequels a black character would play either the lead or a proiminent role. Back in the days, I guess that wasn't so common on screen.

Let's listen to a well orchestrated track from the same period (1968!) by the austrian pianist Roland Kovac. This is an obscure, jazzy and trippy suite (or soundtrack) called Power Start, released on the independent german jazz label MPS Records.

What'up folks... such a long time... I've been so busy these last 5 months, working for lot of festival in my hometown Lyon.
So here I am, back with you lads for a couple of weeks because I plan to travel to China from december to february.

By the way I'm also back in gigs venues as a spectator. A couple of days ago I've seen a great show from Antipop Consortium, a major band of the independent Hip Hop scene from the beginning of the 00's.
Listening to their last LP (after a 7 years wait!) might leave you peplexed but this is definetly a band that you have to catch live. They're more rapping than the last time I saw them all together, and they're rocking up the crowd as they always used to.
M.Sayid got now 2 mics to do this reverb effect that is very present on Fluorescent black...Solid emcees (Sayid, Beans and High Priest) who are also great beatmakers are accompanied by Earlbalze behind his turntables, engeniering sound and making beats...
Check the track "apparently" from APC, from their last full lenght Fluorescent black signed on the brittish label Big Dada.

I hope to be on the web very soon with new mixes, great wax I bought this summer and some more nice stuff coming.

I went to Ahmad Jamal's quartet gig yesterday night... great show, great pianist, one of my "still alive" favorite.

Back home I couldn't help to share with you this classic tune from his acoustic piano period . This track is called "stolen moments" and came on the awakening album released 1970. It features Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums. It's originally written by Oliver Nelson and also appears on the album of Blues and the abstract Truth which is more orchestred than Jamal's trio. Both were signed on Impulse records

Hi folks, been busy these last two weeks...

I brought to you a killer track from a scandinavian modern jazz band called Atomic...don't miss it fellaz...

Back in 2002, I've worked for this jazz Festival in Scotland. I remember to have in my hands this promo EP from a band that became in my opinion, one of the most exciting and creative group of the modern jazz scene.

Five musicians from Norway and Sweden doing their thing and doing it really great. Influences? Probably Coltrane and Don Cherry, the Free Jazz and the Blue note grooves of the 60's. Structure and rhythm lead by super double bassist Ingebrigt Flaten, Paul Nilssen-Love on drums and Havard Wiik on piano, remains as a solid foundation for free improvisation or expression for the Stockholm Front line of trumpeter Magnus Bro and saxophonist Fredrik Ljungkvist.

The track "prayer" appears in this promo Ep and was written by Ingebrigt Flaten who's now doing his solo career. I still look forward to seeing Atomic back on the europeean scenes. Check their website here

Few books I just reviewed:

Blind man with a pistol - Chester Himes, 1969. 10/20
Chester Himes's two star detectives Ed Cercueil and John Fossoyeur (french names) got themselves in a "very hard to follow" story this time. The author's clunky prose still portray every negative aspect of the Harlem community in the late 60's: mindless, crime, vice, etc. The good point of this book is that Himes managed to capture and described well this chaos: a weird riot between three factions in which two cops are trapped. But as I said, the lack of central storyline makes it difficult to read because you 've got the feeling that pieces of this novel are slapped together. Usually in a Chester Himes story, politic and the situation of the black community are better linked. Definetely not his best novel so far...

Triksta - Nik Cohn, 2005. 12/20
Nik Cohn draws a rough portray of the New Orleans rap scene. evene if he made up most of the story, this book is still interesting to read. It deals with this white journalist (himself) who progressed from a writer, writing a magazine article about bounce music, to a New Orleans rap producer including his work with Junie.B for the release of the first 12' of Choppa. Yhe interesting thing is that this book has been written between the collapse of Mo'Money Records (owned by Master P) and the big succes of Lil Wayne.Recommended for the NO rap scene fans!

Train ride- Peter Loughran, 1967. 14/20
Train ride is the story of an absurd wanabee philosopher who's "headaching" and "hangovering" in a train.During the whole trip, he accuses with vehemence society, religion and the established order. This anarchist docker easily plays martyr as soon as he happens to commit an abomination. Irritated the entire ride by few nuns and a little girl who's the definition of brat. This narrator is a sick and disconcerting character who makes this book spreading its perversity to a point of disgust.
Reading this book all the way through, we pardoned this pathetic hero with our brief sympathy and indulgence. Great book in a "nihilst" style.

The Black Dahlia - James Ellroy, 1987.15/20
The body of a girl that was brutaly tortured was found severed in half. Two cops (who are ex-boxing opponents) Lee Blanchard and Bucky Bleichert are assigned to the case... James Ellroy took real events from history and intertwines them with his own writting. The Black Dahlia obviously focuses on the murder of Elizabeth Short, one of the most unsolved enquiry in LA. The book starts with a nice descrition of a boxing match between bucky and Lee, these two characters are very well described along the story and I really like them. They're complex, faulted and their obsession in solving this crime and tracking down the murderer gets higher and higher.

The french moog player Jean Jacques Perrey released this track in 1970 on the obscure jazz funk label Vanguard. I've got this tune from the LP compilation of 96 called "The vanguard experience - I like it" on the label BGP.
This compilation includes various jazz/funk artists from the Vanguard records and especially this one which has been sampled by Primo on "just to get a rep". If you didn't know it, it's time too:

Maspyke is composed of 2 Mcs Tableek & Hanif and a DJ/Beatmaker Roddy Rob that also belongs to the Low Budget Crew (with Kev Brown, Odyssee and Kenn Starr).

After non significant success with the label Elektra in the mid 90's, they decided to create their own label called Bukarance on which they released two 12's and a EP.

They've also recorded stuff on Rawkus, Om records, Groove attack, Jazzy sport and released their last Lp (static) on the west coast indie label ABB.

Thawfor is one of the pioneers of the Chicago Hip Hop underground scene. This gem was released in 2000 on the indie label Ozone music. On this track we got very special guest as Mike Ladd, Slug and Rob Sonic. Thawfor (which stands for "Thawghts" and "Forever") used to produce beats but also writes lyrics, sings and plays plenty of instruments. Go on his web site to check his current work.

Greetings all,

Glad to be back here after 3 months of hard work for my festival.
I 've had a very nice summer.... very busy too: REM, Leonrad Cohen, Massive Attack, Damon Albarn and his Honest Jons crew and more than 40 bands and companies came around. So I didn't find the time to watch what did go around me.

After a quick look on real life, I guess I can try to summerize it quickly:

Firstly, some very bad news:
In the beginning of the summer, disappeared the very talented pianist Esbjorn Svensson. I've post something about him few month before he died on this blog. I feel very sad because i host him a couple of time and as far as I remember he was such an unaffeceted guy (which is getting rare in jazz music!). In my opinion he brought back the so called "jazz trio" in vogue.

An other colosus of music recently passed away.... bold skull, golden chains, leopard skin coat and voice of a baritone.... We'll miss the Black Moses Isaac Hayes.
RIP to these 2 great artists.

What else?
On the sport and entertainement scene, we sold the young prodigy Hatem Ben Harfa to a team I really hate : Marseille.

Did any of you watch the france during the Euro 2008 in Switzerland? Hope not!

For the very first time, in the same ring @ the same time at Summerslam 08'.

What's up fellaz....it's been a while!
Very busy these last weeks and it's gonna be worst and worst.

Just wanted to talk about a great african saxophonist from Mali called Moussa Doumbia. In some ways he's the inventor of a very particular kind of afro-beat which draws as much in american funk as in traditionnal malian music.

In the 80's Moussa came to live in France where he played a lot @ la boule noire in Paris and worked at the same time as a record dealer....He died in the most absolute anonymity....

Last year the californian label Stones Throw had the great idea to publish a compilation called World Psychedelic 3 - the funky fuzzy sounds of West Africa in which the track keleya by Moussa Doubia appears.

Here's the one.

Picture above taken by myself, it's a place I've been living for 3 month when I worked for the Banlieue Rythme Festival in Guediawaye, Senegal in 2003.

No need to introduce this great label, maybe the most productive in this last 70 years. I did not listen to the whole catalog but I will recommand the 51 to 67 period which corresponds to the so called "Hard Bop" golden age.

Here are two tracks from what I consider as the 2 best album released on the label:

First one by trumpetist Lee Morgan feat Joe Henderson (ts), Barry Harris (p), Billy Higgins (d), Bob Cranshaw (b).
The Sidewinder was released in 1963.

One of the most acclaimed jazzman of the modern scene. Esbjorn is a swedish pianist who plays with the same trio for more than ten years now. On that I wanted to share with you, bassist Dan Berglund plays double bass in a Jimmy Hendrix way!

Back in 2001, I remember to host the trio in Edinburgh, right after their sixth opus came out. They played @ Henry's jazz cellar bar, venue was "overpacked", it can contain about 80 people! They 're great guys and they did a terrific show....

Few years after that I saw them in the A vaulx Jazz Festival near Lyon, France. Attendance was about 1000 people.

Last year they played for the Jazz à Vienne festival in front of a very enthousiatic crowd of 8000 people.....

Make your own opinion on this track from one of their first album which got the same title and was released on ACT in 2000.

Some say he’s twelve years old, some say he’s two meters tall, some say he’s a gipsy, some says he robbed X and Y, some say he comes from Marseille... Let’s stop there with the gossips which the graffiti scene loves so much.

Trane is none of the above, Trane is all of the above, and so much more than that. If there were only one last man standing, it would be him. By the way, he’s the only one left, the others are at Agnès B., in jail, or on internet forums running in the virtual world after a title that they have long missed a long time ago.

Snitches are no use, Trane has bled France so much that he could go behind bars for 10 years and still return with his crown. Never seen before. Every era has its stars heavy-hitters from Boxer to O’clock, but nothing comes even close to the what Trane achieved. Nothing, nobody. Alone, he puts any crews to shame. Inevitable. Drive your car to the french countryside, find the closest railway station, there will be a piece by Trane. His detractors talk about his absence of style:«He always does the same thing ». How funny that in a scene where the last trends are imitated so easily, one reproaches to the last of the Mohicans to play it old school and repeat the same thing over and over: T.R.A.N.E. You can tell you don’t get it, in your face, see what separates you from the throne. If you think it sucks so bad, go ahead, get in the game, but watch it, the turnament won’t last only 15 days, the time to find something else to copy. With Trane, there is no golden goal, the matches goes on in the locker room...do not count on the referee to help you...

Yep, Trane plays in the best team. In the UV TPK, defensive midfield make Gatuso look like a kitten, Fuzi plays number 10 and distributes to his Padawan. Not classy, not appreciated by the scene, not hype, but always decisive, always in the place to be, while the others mess up their rare occasions. Trane transforms everything. His production makes it impossible to write any kind of biography. No matter the crews he left, the names he used, the times he fell. In the end, there will be 5 chromium letters carved on a shop, on a roof, on a wagon, a memory.

No need to wait for the death of a French Academy member to celebrate him. He’s already there, immortal, permanent "marked", carved "à la Altona" in the minds of all those who once looked up from their newspapers in the public transports, all those who showed interest in graffiti, all those who take a look around, those who saw their environment change as the rats were leaving the subway stations to dirty the city.

France Gall - Zoi Zoi

Great latino-funk tune from the french pop singer France Gall. This track first appeared in a compilation called "Mondo Bossa" on the italian label Premier in the early 70's. It was also released in 7' for the french market (see picture below).

N.Angelo wrote the song but on that very one this is performed by brazilian pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano.

According to specialists, Joe Bataan was influenced by latin boogalo and afro american doo-wop, in my opinion the music of this talented pianist remains as one of my favorites funk from the 70's. Maybe because of his latin vocalists and the great breaks done by cuban percussions that really characterize the sound of the guy on this album "Salsoul".

Two tracks right here from this LP released in 1973 on Harlem based label Mericana records .
